BLOOM #18 花開 #18
2022 / Watercolor with Collage—painted Shoji paper on 640 gsm Saunders Waterford paper
BLOOM #18 is part of a large series of paintings begun at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020. During those uncertain and restricted times, my garden became my world. My inspiration from plant forms became stylised shapes, which were made into compositions to express light, energy and optimism for the future.
In addition to watercolour painted directly onto paper, I painted and collaged Shoji—a smooth, semi translucent Japanese paper. I juxtaposed firm-cut edges of organic shapes with more amorphous and freely painted ones, some of which dissolve at the edges.
2021 / Watercolor, White acrylic ink, and Gesso with a small amount of Painted and collaged Shoji paper
FLURRY is a painting from a series called “LIVIA’S GARDEN“, which was inspired by the beautiful garden paintings in Livia’s Villa, Rome.
Here I wanted to convey the sense of delight of being in a garden, a space of joy, fun, peace, reflection and sometimes solace. I used gesture and immediacy of mark to convey transience and fragility of the world we inhabit.
As my working process lies between the intuitive and the intentional, I arrive at my image through orchestrating a range of fluid and sensory explorations of watercolour.
2022 / Watercolor with Collage—painted Shoji paper on 640 gsm Saunders Waterford paper
POOL is part of my series called “BREATHE.“ This painting refers specifically to the flow of water, celebrating the positive and uplifting experience of the elemental.
In this painting I have collaged painted Shoji paper using cut organic shapes to explore the dynamic contrast between crisp edges and softer, fluidly painted areas.
2021 / Watercolor and Gesso on Saunders Waterford 640 gsm paper
RIDGE is a painting from my “BREATHE“ series where my focus concentrated on land forms and the space around it. In this painting I have explored the contrast between painted areas through intuitive calligraphic mark-making and the play of negative space.
I sought to evoke a range of sensations, from energetic movement to a stillness, which could create an atmosphere of contemplation.
