My watercolours are abstract in that nothing is depicted directly or recognisably, and yet the pictures are accompanied by a quietly implied narrative. What fascinates me about the medium of watercolour is the speed with which it can move from unruly density to wide-open atmosphere. Too effervescent to be clearly painting, too openly respectful of chance to be drawings, my watercolours try not to imprison the beauty I see, to avoid a questionable fixity of aesthetics. This gives the works a certain anxious restlessness that captivates the viewer, through which they nevertheless possess the quality of an “other world.”

2023 / Watercolor on Paper 水彩 紙本 / 100 × 70 cm

The lightness of watercolour invites me to explore and transform the blank expanse of large sheets of paper, much like a child investigates the endlessness of the world. This emptiness holds infinite possibilities for creation. The moment a drop of water and pigment meets the paper, a new beginning occurs. Painting is a magical language that communicates with splashes of color instead of words, expressing an inner vision of a mysteriously wonderful world that transcends the ordinary. Like music, color has the power to touch our souls. The many nuances of color, with their full spectrum of emotions, counterbalance our tendency towards rational discipline. Watercolour painting is an interplay of thought, dreaming, and poetry.

The two cut out watercolours Dance and Revolution of the viaduct after Paul KLEE, are from a series of works that I have been doing in 2024–2025 where I worked on earlier 120 × 150 cm watercolours from previous years by using paper cutting. This enables me to relate the figures to the constellations of form and colour that I have already used in earlier works. While I reject the colour in the silhouettes, the form currently appears in a special way. The figure in the picture appears white, represented by the wall, while the picture around it is coloured. The colour was previously applied with vigorous sweeps. This contrasts the gesturally painted image with the concentrated delineation of the figure.

I am interested in the way the silhouette breaks through the paper, allowing real shadows to enter the work. These shadowy pieces depict dancing figures that seem to move dynamically across the walls. They consist of fantastical, unidentifiable beings. The pictures reveal the figures’ free arrangement and behaviour, aiming to give the watercolours a two-dimensional quality that is reminiscent of the frieze-like arrangement of figures in the historical Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
