Coastline Vista
2023 / Watercolor on Paper 水彩 紙本 / 28 × 38 cm
South of Point Lobos, the massive Santa Lucia Mountain Range rises dramatically out of the Pacific Ocean. California’s iconic and picturesque Highway 1 is carved into the mountainside, though it is often closed because of frequent landslides. Coastline Vista was painted along Highway 1, at one of the few places where I could easily park my car and observe the ocean waves breaking along the rocky coast.
October Afternoon at Bird Island
2023 / Watercolor on Paper 水彩 紙本 / 28 × 38 cm
Bird Island is in Point Lobos, a nature preserve along California’s Pacific Coast. During the Spring and Summer, it is a rookery for pelicans and cormorants. In the Fall the birds have migrated, leaving behind the rocky island, devoid of vegetation and covered in guano. October Afternoon at Bird Island depicts the glare of the golden afternoon light. Looking westward, I like to imagine a map that shows the Pacific Rim, with California and Taiwan connected to each other.
Vista to Bird Island

Bird Island is in Point Lobos, a nature preserve along California’s Pacific Coast. Vista to Bird Island depicts a rookery for pelicans and cormorants. On the island, these ground-nesting birds are protected from land-based predators. Viewed from a distance, this guano-covered island has a spectral quality.

Backyard Poppies
2025 / Watercolor on Paper 水彩 紙本 / 28 × 38 cm
Eschscholzia californica, is a botanical native to California. In the late 1700s, Spanish colonists called the poppy “copa de oro,” which translates in English to “cup of gold.” In the mid-1800s, California was a part of the United States of America, and they became known as “California Poppy.” They are nyctinastic, closing at night and on rainy days. Backyard Poppies depicts the California Poppies that have naturalized in my home garden. Because of the rainy weather, I looked out the window to paint the poppies’ buds, flowers, and seedpods.
